Beauty & The Streets (Overture Vol. III)

I'm Fighting Every War At Once And I'm Winning
You Don't Give People You Don't Love The Power To Destroy You

The World Is A Beautiful Place And I'm No Longer Afraid To Die

Beauty & The Streets is more than portraits of beautiful women, it's about the women depicted in the portraits. These women have their own stories, they're living their own struggles. They know pain, love, loss, loneliness, joy, they're strong women who know the meaning of empowerment, passion and freedom of expression of one's own self. They reject utterly sardonic platitudes and know inequality and deal with objectification and misogyny on a daily basis. They know the feeling of contempt for the status quo and subjugation of their freewill and rights. They know that freedom isn't free and that all that has been fought for will need to be taken with an iron fist and loud voice. They represent the voice of all the women who have fought for basic human rights and equality for hundreds of years. A voice that says "I want to live my life freely, peacefully and without judgment". A voice that resonates with the notion of true understanding hat the rights of women should have been standard and that this fight for basic equal rights should have been over a long time ago.

Since 2012 I've made it my mission to produce a body of work where my skills could be utilized to their full potential. I continue to push my limits and hope to explore further narratives and evolve with this series.

Beauty & The Streets is my way of making an otherwise ugliness in the world beautiful.

I often do some small portraits from movies for fun, along with commissions here and there. Above is a combination of them along with a painting I did while attending the painting workshop of Casey Baugh (at the top) I never posted it last year when I completed it.

Still Lifes

Barnburner II - 10x10 graphite on Bristol

Barnburner I - 12x12 oil on canvas
Bianchi - 10x10 oil on circle canvas

Bubblegum - 12x12 oil on canvas
Sunday Afternoon - 10x14 oil on linen

Lucha - 9x12 oil on paper
Calavera 9x12 oil on paper

Hey everyone! Apologies for the inactivity lately, I've been busy on various projects. Hopefully you'll enjoy these paintings. These are all still life paintings I've done over the past several months and the Bianchi painting was in a show at Studio Gallery in San Francisco. I want to do more still life paintings soon since they can teach you a whole lot about proportion, value, color, perspective, etc. I highly suggest you try doing still life paintings whenever you can, it's a great challenge to paint or draw from life and a great way to help you improve your skills!

Enjoy!

Come Join Me For A Sad Time

I haven't done a painting in a while with more flesh showing, and I've had this one lying around kind of half started, so i thought I'd just bang it out and used only natural hair brushes to get a more painterly/finished look. I tried my best to somewhat emulate Jeremy Mann's style backgrounds by accident using a pallet knife. Took about 2 sessions to complete. I hope you like it!

Nieces' Presents

I painted these for my 2 nieces since they asked me to paint them some birds of paradise. I obviously couldn't say no to the, plus it gave me a chance to try my hand at applying my skills on some new subjects. Both are 8x10 oil on canvas board. Enjoy!

"Voice The Victory And Unlearn The Ways Of Self Defeat" - 14x18 oil on canvas
"I Was Born Make Mistakes, But I Ain't Scared To Take The Weight" - 14x18 oil on canvas

"An intimate look at women in dirty/grimey places, showing that no matter where a woman is placed, the setting can be transformed. Like all things in nature, everything has an opposite. Black/ white, good/bad ugliness/beauty...the streets and it's ugliness, women and their beauty, that's one of the most honest truths of the world."
- excerpt from my original sketchbook notes

"I want to be a mystery to you, untouchable, a star all to myself, a galaxy away from your starved fingers"
- Emily Palermo

"If you're going through hell, keep going"
- Winston Churchhill

"Nobody can save you but yourself and you're worth saving. It's a war not easily won, but if anything is worth winning then this is it. Think about it. Think about saving yourself."
- Charles Bukowski

Bill Murray

"Lost in Translation"
11x14 oil on linen

This painting was pretty damn fun to paint! I've been a Bill Murray fan for a long time, and when I was approached to do a piece inspired by him and his works, I was very stoked! Lost In Translation is one of my all time favorite movies, the fact that it has Bill Murray in it has a lot to do with that, so I thought I'd take a stab at painting him as his character "Bob Harris". It was a toss up between this, Groundhog Day, Ghostbusters and Rushmore. I might do one of those other ones some day...

This piece will be exhibited at the event: The Murray Affair: The Bill Murray Art Show
All the info can be found there, but the show is happening on August 8th in San Francisco at Public Works SF and I'm very exited about it!

Also the show is gaining hype on the internet from various sites online, here are 2 that feature my painting:

The Creators Project

and The Reynolds Report

Thanks to Ezra and Julie Croft for putting on the show and I can't wait to see what other artworks will be there!

Portrait of An Artist

Portrait of An Artist
9x12 oil on canvas

This was a fun portrait for my long time friend. It was a gift for his birthday. I intended on painting a larger version of this back in 2010 in acrylics (which was my chosen medium back then) but i kept fussing with it and could never get the hang of it. Now that i'm more comfortable in my chosen medium of oils, I thought I'd give this another shot, and I really enjoyed the outcome!

Check my friend's music projects out as well! The Actress Not The Character

Cheers!

Thom Yorke

Thom Yorke
9x12 oil on canvas board

I wanted to stretch my art muscles a bit and attempt a portrait painting using only natural hair brushes instead of my usual combination of natural and synthetic. I gave myself a bit of a restricted palette of colors to work from also. I thought the final result came out quite well.

A portrait I did for my friend of her late puppy. He was a rescue from the pound and was getting up there in age. I wanted to show my sentiments with something physical, as I feel sometimes, words can't do enough. It was my first time painting an animal in oils where I actually felt comfortable enough to make it be the sole subject. I think I got his likeness down and I also had an opportunity to work on my nature background skills. RIP little pup.

El Alacran

'El Alacran'
5x7 oil on canvas board

My piece for Noche de Los Muertos show in Santa Barbara. The show's theme was Loteria, the Spanish Bingo-like game. I chose the number 40 card El Alacran (The Scorpion). I couldn't make it to the show in person, but I saw photos and heard from the curator that it was a great turn out.

Cheers!

A portrait of the awesome Marilyn Rondon aka Totally Stoked. I had the awesome chance to meet her when I visited New York for the first time in September of 2012. I had been following her work on Tumblr and Instagram (which is now unavailable). This painting was done sometime in February of 2013 but I never got a chance to get a good photo of it. Check out her work if you get a chance!

Enjoy!

Deathblow - 7.5x10 oil on moleskine paper

All of the above are studies I did in about 3 hours or so. It was a great learning experience for me. I found better use of muting down colors and achieving more realistic color tones and I liked experimenting with brighter and newer colors. On to more painting!

Enjoy!
